Urinary incontinence in its many manifestations is a challenge for patients and urologists alike. In some cases, use of a urinary catheter in determining PVR can create additional problems for the patient. Using a portable ultrasound instrument to measure pre- and post-void residual is noninvasive, accurate, and reliable. Portable ultrasound also can be useful in designing effective toileting assistance and bladder retraining programs.
